Teacher Education in Non-pedagogical Universities in Russia


Over the past two decades active reformations in the field of teacher education have been taking place in many countries. Russia is no exception to this where teacher education has traditionally been considered as one of the main priorities in government policies. Indeed, since the beginning of the XXI century teacher education has become an area of significant institutional transformations with focus on organizational structures. This reorganization has led to the decrease in numbers of specialized pedagogical universities and the increased role of non-pedagogical universities for the field of teacher education. By now we have shifted from specialized pedagogical universities to universities that offer programs in teacher education. Statistics show that teacher education is becoming a priority for many non-pedagogical universities (including federal, classical and regional core universities). This report aims to examine all of the aforementioned changes and highlight current diversification in the Russian system of teacher education.
