PhD, Senior Lecturer, Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Pretoria (South Africa)

Dr Joyce West (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the University of Pretoria, where she teaches and coordinates literacy modules and supervises postgraduate research across the BEd, Honours, MEd and PhD programmes. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of applied linguistics in the early years, the teaching of early reading skills, multilingual education, and teacher education, anchored by a deep commitment to inquiry-based, project-based, and play-based learning, as well as to the creative power of children’s literature and meaningful technology integration.

Her research profile (Google Scholar; ORCID iD 0000-0003-3916-9754) reflects a coherent agenda on reading pedagogy, multilingual classrooms, assessment, and technology-enhanced learning. Representative peer-reviewed publications include a study in Social Sciences & Humanities Open that frames Bloom’s taxonomy and authentic learning as a metacognitive scaffold for preservice teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in reading; work in Perspectives in Education on blended learning through the Community of Inquiry; a widely cited article in the South African Journal of Childhood Education on overcrowded classrooms; and an article in Koers on collaborative conversations with teachers during and after COVID-19.
